What is Barbershop Harmony?
Barbershop harmony is one of three forms of original American music, the other two being the Cowboy ballad, which has evolved into today's Country music, and the Negro Spiritual, from which has evolved blues, rock & roll, and most jazz forms. Technically, barbershop is a style of unaccompanied vocal music with four-part chords on every melody note. The melody is most usually sung by the lead (second voice from the top), with the tenor harmonizing above the melody, the bass singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completing the chord, either above or below the melody.
Barbershop harmony usually features songs with straight forward lyrics and easily singable melodies, which imply chords that are easily harmonized "by ear." One frequent chord that is often implied is the "barbershop seventh" chord, consisting of a major triad with a flatted seventh. (Hope you're still with us on that one!)
Barbershop singers learn to adjust pitches by ear to achieve perfectly tuned chords, which can result in creating audible overtones at both higher and lower frequencies than are sung by any of the four voices. That's right -- 5 or 6 notes from four voices! This effect is often referred to as "expanded sound" or "ringing chords." It's what gives barbershop it's unique sound.
Barbershop music is not "concert style" music, but rather, it is a presentational art form that uses both musical and visual methods to convey the message of the song. This provides the audience with a very entertaining experience. How entertaining??? Give a listen by clicking on the following YouTube video to see how one of our champions quartets does it. Enjoy!

The Baylander Chorus
The Baylander Chorus is the Green Bay, Wisconsin chapter of SPEBSQSA. Since 1945, members of the Green Bay chapter have entertained tens of thousands of people with our barbershop-style singing.
We have more than 30 active members, ranging in age from 19 to more than 80. Our members include men from various occupations. Most of our members live in and around the Green Bay area, but we also have members who drive in for rehearsals every week from outlying points such as Shawano, Sturgeon Bay, and Oconto Falls.
We put on several performances each year, including a cabaret dinner show each autumn, a benefit Christmas show to support local food pantries in December, and our annual Harmony Jubilee in June. We also deliver Singing Valentines throughout the Green Bay area in February, as well as "package" shows in our part of Wisconsin.
But we are most proud of our ability to make financial contributions each year to many area organizations. Since 1995, we have donated more than $60,000 to such causes!
